In previous years, Optometry Tasmania members have had the opportunity to complete a CPR refresher course through the Australian Red Cross on the day before the conference. This event is for Early Career members (less than 10 years from graduation) of Optometry Australia. New members living and working in Tasmania are also warmly welcome, including immediate and recent graduates who have recently moved to Tasmania.

Solving binocular vision problems

This 2-hour session will consist of 3 parts:

  1. Discussing a framework for optometrists to assess, diagnose and manage binocular vision conditions;

  2. A hands-on workshop of binocular vision tests, and

  3. Interactive case discussions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply an evidence-based framework to accommodation-vergence disorders.

  • Apply an evidence-based framework to strabismus and amblyopia, including use of eye drops in assessment, diagnosis and management.

This lecture will cover the assessment, diagnosis and management of different forms of diplopia in a way that (hopefully) makes sense. When to worry and when to investigate and when to refer will be addressed.

Strabismus workshop: The ins and outs and the ups
and downs

Strabismus can be a confusing subject, and the causes are diverse and sometimes vision and even life threatening. This session will include how to assess and diagnose various forms of horizontal and vertical strabismus. Starting with the basics, such as cover tests and ocular motility examination techniques, this workshop will explore various aspects of strabismus with the use of video case studies.

  • Assess common strabismus conditions with increased understanding and confidence.

Managing Amelia’s Myopia – Getting it Right from the Start

As the adoption of myopia management as the standard of care becomes established, the emphasis moves to achieving the best possible result for the child.  This interactive workshop follows a case over several years and practitioners are required to discuss and decide on the best course of action as new information becomes available at each follow-up visit.

Learning Objectives:

  • Use appropriate criteria to inform decision-making regarding the progress of a child undertaking myopia management over the years of treatment.

  • Make an evidence-based decision on whether a myopia management treatment is sufficiently effective.

Therapeutics for children made easy and safe
(for you and the patient!)

Therapeutics is an extremely important aspect of eye care health, and a good knowledge base expands optometrists’ management options and increases confidence and patient safety. This session will cover several common clinical conditions that are encountered in paediatric eye care and focus on appropriate management options. Just as it is important to treat appropriately, the session will also explore inappropriate and contraindicated treatment decisions. Case studies will be included.

Learning Objectives:

  • Prescribe appropriate medical therapy for different paediatric ocular conditions.

This presentation will provide an update on local and state matters and policies from the Head of Department Ophthalmology at the Royal Hobart Hospital and the Chair of the Tasmanian Eyecare Services Network.

There will be opportunity in this session for audience participation and interaction to discuss and inform the Tasmanian Eyecare Services Network’s future vision for eyecare services in Tasmania.
