Retinal nerve fibre layer loss – not just glaucoma

Although it is the most frequently diagnosed optic neuropathy, it is important to remember that glaucoma is a diagnosis of exclusion, requiring considerable thought in the differential diagnosis process. Accurate diagnosis is important to initiate timely management, and to avoid unnecessary treatment for patients. This session will cover the various clinical techniques and thought processes involved in differentiating retinal nerve fibre layer loss, which is not always glaucoma using clinical techniques.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of structural assessment and imaging for identifying features of glaucoma and other optic neuropathies.

  • Understand the structure-function relationship in glaucoma and diseases of the visual pathway.

  • Integrate clinical information for accurate differential diagnosis of optic neuropathies.

Personalised glaucoma management in practice

As a chronic eye condition, the management of glaucoma requires careful consideration of the individual patient’s ocular condition in conjunction with other systemic issues and lifestyle factors. A holistic approach requires an open mind for different management pathways, including therapeutics, a watchful waiting approach and co-management strategies. This session will use a case-based approach to showcase different management approaches to the care of patients with glaucoma.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role of risk, clinical grading and progression information to guide therapeutic management of glaucoma.

  • Integrate holistic patient information for effective glaucoma care.
